A Taste of Home Abroad

As an American living abroad, I’ve learned that homesickness can strike unexpectedly. My go-to remedy? Whipping up a batch of my classic American Chocolate Chip Cookies. I’ve noticed that the “American Style” cookies available abroad often differ significantly from the ones I grew up with – some almost resembling cake. If you’re yearning for an authentic taste of home, give my recipe a try and let me know what you think!

Guten Appetit!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (156g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (227g) butter, melted (not too hot!)
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ cup (32g) light brown sugar, packed
  • ⅔ cup (85g) granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 cups (256g) semisweet chocolate chips
  • Coarse sea salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350F (176C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

3. Prepare Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, beat together the melted butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and apple cider vinegar until smooth. Add the egg and beat until just combined.

4. Combine Wet and Dry: Slowly incorporate the dry flour mixture into the wet mixture until fully combined. Gently fold in the semisweet chocolate chips.

5. Scoop and Bake: Using a large cookie scoop (about 2 rounded tablespoons), drop dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 3 inches (7 1/2 cm) apart.

6. Optional: chill for one hour in fridge

7. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until the edges are golden brown and crispy, while the center remains soft.

8. Finish with Sea Salt: Remove from the oven and sprinkle the cookies with coarse sea salt for an extra burst of flavor

.Cooling Process: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5-10 minutes before transferring them to a cooling rack.

Notes:

  • For regular-sized cookies, use a medium cookie scoop.
